Hawthorne Lane has chosen to be involved with Roof Above through our Room In the Inn and Operation Sandwich ministries. For more than three years Hawthorne Lane families, including children and youth, have lovingly made 500 delicious sandwiches each month in support of Roof Above Day Services Operation Sandwich and Bagged Meal Programs. Roof Above serves 300,000 sandwiches a year to the homeless community at multiple centers. Roof Above administrators have shared that sandwiches from Hawthorne Lane and other Charlotte churches have a vital impact on the Roof Above mission.
Roof Above is a comprehensive homeless service provider for Charlotte Mecklenburg. Their mission is to unite communities to end homelessness one life at a time. In keeping with Jesus’ teachings, we are called to love and care for our neighbor and be involved in ministry that seeks to help restore dignity and hope for our neighbors who are homeless, poor, and hungry.

For over twenty years Hawthorne Lane has been partnering with Roof Above to extend comfort and safety for our unhoused neighbors during the coldest months of the year. Every Tuesday night from December until March Hawthorne Lane opens its church doors to 14 unhoused neighbors in the Charlotte area, offering a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, a shower and laundry among other things. Turning Hawthorne Lane into a cold weather shelter requires a great deal of work and this ministry is only possible thanks to a plethora of volunteers who each week fill a variety of roles: setting up space at the church, driving a bus to pick up guests, providing dinner and dessert, staying overnight at the church, doing laundry for guests, driving guests back Uptown, cleaning up the church, and dropping/picking up bedding laundry. Thanks to the work of these volunteers Hawthorne Lane has welcomed in close to 4,000 of our unhoused neighbors over the last two decades.

During the advent and lenten seasons, our church selects various local missions to support, aiming to prepare our hearts for Christmas and Easter. This practice reflects Jesus' teachings serving others. By engaging in these acts of service, we seek to embody the spirit of giving and selflessness that are central to these religious holidays. This also allows us to connect with our local community and address specific needs that may be present during these times of the year. Our church members enthusiastically participate in these missions, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose within our congregation.

Youth missions at Hawthorne Lane are important because they provide young people with the opportunity to serve others, grow in their faith, and develop a heart for mission work. Experiences like volunteering with Room in the Inn and home repair on summer mission trips have been life-changing for the youth involved and helped them develop a deeper understanding of the needs of others and the importance of serving those in need. Additionally, youth missions help our youth develop leadership skills, build relationships with their peers, and gain a sense of purpose and direction in their lives.

Children's missions at Hawthorne Lane are important because they help instill a sense of compassion, empathy, and service in young children. By participating in missions, children learn about the needs of others and how they can make a positive impact in their community and the world. Early exposure to service and outreach opportunities like making sandwiches for Roof Above and making blankets for babies in NICU help shape our children into caring, responsible, and engaged members of society as they grow older. Additionally, children's missions provide an opportunity for kids to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of purpose as they work together to make a difference in the lives of others.
