While it may not be cold outside, there are still items needed by our homeless neighbors. One of the most frequently requested items at Urban Ministry and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte is new underwear. We would like to use the month of March to collect New undies for both men and women. The following items are being collected.
• Men’s Boxers – sizes L, XL and 2XL
• Men’s White V-neck T-shirts – sizes L, XL and 2XL
• Ladies Underwear sizes 7 to 10.
There will be marked laundry baskets on either side of the Sanctuary each Sunday in March to collect your donations. Thanks for helping to brighten a neighbor’s day!
AND don’t forget the BRAS!
You need not leave the house to participate in HLUMC’s Undie Fundie effort! Yoga for Life is again sponsoring a Coobie Bra sale. These undergarments are attractive, comfortable, easy to launder and flexibly sized. Perfect for easy distribution to our neighbors — and so needed! Use Zelle at 7042936868 to purchase one Coobie Bra for $22 or buy two for $40. AND if you purchase two Coobie Bras, Yoga for Life will donate a third to Urban Ministry Center. What a deal!
All are welcome in this place…as many have heard there were significant votes taken at the UM General Conference this past week. While we at Hawthorne Lane remain faithfully United Methodist we also stand strong in our commitment to welcoming all to God’s table. We know we are called to Be Disciples, Make Disciples, and Transform Lives and we will continue to work toward that goal each and everyday of our life in community together. We are passionate about worshipping together, about growing in our faith together, and serving together…We invite you to come and join us! gay or straight, black or white, democrat or republican, rich or poor …ALL…ALL are welcome in this place and at Christ’s table. The words to “Welcome” by Mark Miller and Laurie Zelman say it best…
Let’s talk together of a time when we will share a feast
where pride and power kneel to serve the lonely and the least
and joy will set the table as we join our hands to pray,
singing welcome, welcome to this place
you’re invited to come and know God’s grace,
all are welcome, the love of God to share
’cause all of us are welcome here,
all are welcome in this place.
(Words by Laurie Zelman and Mark Miller, 2007)

Easter Vigil 11pm!
We are getting back to our roots again this year with this ancient prayer vigil service. Historically an Easter Vigil is service held in Christian churches as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. It is held in the hours of darkness between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Day – most commonly in the evening of Holy Saturday or midnight – and is the first celebration of Easter. (traditionally days began at sunset). This year we will celebrate the Easter Vigil instead of the sunrise service on Sunday morning. Following the service we will gather for coffee and cinnamon rolls as we welcome the resurrection of Christ!
Easter Sunday Morning – 10:30am
All the works – great music and preaching, easter lilies, flowering the cross, a fabulous festive service to honor the resurrection of Jesus!
The preschool will host an Art Show and Silent Auction at Resident Culture! Wednesday March 6th is Ash Wednesday. Come join us in the sanctuary at 6:45pm to start off our Lenten season together with prayer, the Word, and reflection…and of course ashes. The service will be 45minutes long and conclude with time to come to the altar and have the sign of the cross in ash put on your forehead if you choose. Our children will be invited to the Kids Worship 501 room to have a special Ash Wednesday service with Ms. Lizanne and then get to come back to the sanctuary for ashes at the end. Nursery will be provided for the youngest among us. Come to reflect on the ultimate gift of Love.
The long-anticipated called, special General Conference of the United Methodist Church begins on February 23. Pastor Tom is headed to St. Louis as an observer and will be writing about his experiences, observations and the actions of this singularly significant moment in the life of the UMC. He has created a blog that he will update regularly. A first post is already “live” on the site, tsteagald.blogspot.com. You are encouraged to go there often over the days leading up to GC, the GC itself, and the days after. You may comment, question, and express your own reactions to the event (you can live-stream it at www.umc,org).
The Sign and the Sacrifice: A bible study for the weeks of Lent. Have you ever wondered what the Cross means? What Jesus death and resurrection signifies? For five weeks during Lent we will consider these questions, using as a resource Rowan Williams’ “The Sign and the Sacrifice: The Meaning of the Cross and Resurrection.” The book is rather short (102 pages), easy to read, and is divided into five neat chapters Pastor Tom will lead discussion at BOTH 9:45 a.m. AND 6:45 p.m. on March 13, 20, 27; and on April 3 and 10. This is a great opportunity to be a part of a short-term study with others at HLUMC.
