M3 is music, a message, and mission. We love gathering to sing/play instruments together. We always need to hear a WORD from the Bible, and we at HLUMC are passionate about missions. That makes M3! Come be a part of it – it’s one of the best things you’ll do all week. All M3 groups are gathered by age – each will have leaders that help the kids or adults connect to the Word in a way that makes sense for their ages.
Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm ***STARTING SEPTEMBER 8
- Nursery for babies and toddlers
- M3 (3years old – Kindergarten) w/ Ms. MaryLynn Bain
- M3(1st-5th Grade) w/Ms. Lizanne and Ms. Deloris
- M3 (6th-12th grade) – Youth Choir and Youth Praise Team together w/Ms. Meg and Miss O
- Chancel Choir (college age – adults) w/Carrie & Brian
Registration is required to participate in M3. The cost is $50 per semester. That money helps cover the costs of pulling all the pieces together – the leaders, the music and lessons, and a TEESHIRT of course! Registration is coming out SOON! Stay tuned here.
p.s. Dinner will follow M3 as long as we are safe to have it – we hope to spread out more, have the meals put in boxes rather than a serving line, and eat outside as much as the weather will allow!
In times of uncertainty and challenge, meditation, breath work and mindful movement practices take on increasing importance — as do connection and community — so Karen Williams has offered to teach a FREE Online Chair Yoga Class to members and friends of HLUMC using Zoom.
Join Karen on Tuesday, April 21 and 28 at 9:00 a.m. for a gentle, slow-paced, seated practice (suitable for all ages) that emphasizes comfort, restorative movement and breath work. The 30-minute class will relax your body and mind, improve your musculoskeletal fitness and flexibility and enhance your overall health and well-being. Plus, you can practice with friends!
To access the class, go to Zoom.us and enter 956-074-514 as the Meeting ID. The password is 123.
Welcome to our new youth director!
Ornella Umubyeyi starts at HLUMC on March 1st and is very excited to see where God will take the youth thisyear as we worship, grow, and serve together. We are excited for her leadership!
A little about Ornella:
Each week day while we are in stay at home orders and social distancing the staff at HLUMC will be sharing a reflection at 12 noon for a few minutes – 5-10 minutes. A short break in our day to reconnect with one another and most importantly to God. We may be separated by space but our God continues to connect us to one another through Word and prayer. Reflections will be posted here and on all of our social media platforms.
While it may not be cold outside, there are still items needed by our homeless neighbors. One of the most frequently requested items at Urban Ministry and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte is new underwear. We would like to use the month of March to collect New undies for both men and women. The following items are being collected.
• Men’s Boxers – sizes L, XL and 2XL
• Men’s White V-neck T-shirts – sizes L, XL and 2XL
• Ladies Underwear sizes 7 to 10.
There will be marked laundry baskets on either side of the Sanctuary each Sunday in March to collect your donations. Thanks for helping to brighten a neighbor’s day!
AND don’t forget the BRAS!
You need not leave the house to participate in HLUMC’s Undie Fundie effort! Yoga for Life is again sponsoring a Coobie Bra sale. These undergarments are attractive, comfortable, easy to launder and flexibly sized. Perfect for easy distribution to our neighbors — and so needed! Use Zelle at 7042936868 to purchase one Coobie Bra for $22 or buy two for $40. AND if you purchase two Coobie Bras, Yoga for Life will donate a third to Urban Ministry Center. What a deal!

About the Book:
God is a foodie who wants to transform your supper into sacrament.
One of America’s most beloved teachers and writers, Margaret Feinberg, goes on a remarkable journey to unearth God’s perspective on food.
She writes that since the opening of creation, God, the Master Chef, seeds the world with pomegranates and passionfruit, beans and greens and tangerines. When the Israelites wander in the desert for forty years, God, the Pastry Chef, delivers the sweet bread of heaven. After arriving in the Promised Land, God reveals himself as Barbecue Master, delighting in meat sacrifices. Like his Foodie Father, Jesus throws the disciples an unforgettable two-course farewell supper to be repeated until his return.
This groundbreaking book provides a culinary exploration of Scripture. You’ll descend 400 feet below ground into the frosty white caverns of a salt mine, fish on the Sea of Galilee, bake fresh matzo at Yale University, ferry to a remote island in Croatia to harvest olives, spend time with a Texas butcher known as “the meat apostle,” and wander a California farm with one of the world’s premier fig farmers.
With each visit, Margaret asks, “How do you read these Scriptures, not as theologians, but in light of what you do every day?” Their answers will forever change the way you read the Bible – and approach every meal.
Taste and See is a delicious read that includes dozens of recipes for those who, like Margaret, believe some of life’s richest moments are spent savoring a meal with those you love.
Perhaps God’s foodie focus is meant to do more than satisfy our bellies. It’s meant to heal our souls, as we learn to taste and see the goodness of God together. After all, food is God’s love made edible.
See you around the table!
Come celebrate the birth of the Messiah with us at Hawthorne Lane. We will have three different options for worship on Christmas Eve.
Live Nativity Worship – 5:30pm – Outside on the front lawn. Live action of the birth story, simple christmas carols, real animals as well as hot chocolate and cookies to share!
Family Worship – 7pm – Inside the sanctuary. Story, Carols, Choir led, Candles with Silent Night/Joy to the World to send us out!
11pm Prayer & Communion – come gather with Pastor Tom to reflect on the coming of our Savior. Sit and reflect, come to the rail for communion, stay as as long as you’d like until midnight.
Our HLUMC Children’s Ministry will be selling Poinsettias for display in our sanctuary on Sunday, December 22nd. Each Poinsettia will be $12.00 and can be purchased in “memory” or “honor” of a loved one or friend. All proceeds will go to help support our Children’s Ministry programs. Order Here
Each Sunday the HLUMC Children’s Ministry will be collecting “gently” used toys to donate to “Turn Around Toys” . We will have boxes in the sanctuary for children to place their used toys that they want to donate. This will be a VERY good teaching opportunity for our children to “let go” of a toy that has brought them joy in order to bring joy to another child. Collection will start DECEMBER 8.
Here is a bit of information about TurnAround Toys:
Turn Around Toys mission is to reach the unreachable; to give without condition and show the love of Jesus through gently used toys, books and stuffed animals. Turn Around Toys is physically turning a toy from one child to another but its also about turning lives around as well. Toys are very significant to a child as it teaches them social, emotional, and interactive skills. We at Turn Around Toys want to help turn lives one toy at a time.
Often the best place to gather is around the dinner table. This also can be the place where we can share in fellowship, worship, pray, and study together. HLUMC is experimenting with a new idea for small group gatherings that involves gathering in homes around the dinner table. “Dinner church” is a growing concept that in many places is replacing the traditional sunday morning bible study/sunday school. We are looking for individuals, couples, and families who may be interested in creating community and faith building in this way. Groups may gather and then choose homes to rotate through or maybe one couple/individual would like to be the hosts. The ideal gathering is 8-14 people. Gatherings can be weekly, twice a month, monthly – whatever you decide together. Childcare will be offered in the hosts home to enable parents with young children to participate. Would you like to host a small group at your home? Or are you interested in learning more about existing small group gatherings? See Pastor Carrie firstname.lastname@example.org
