Featured Back-To-School Blessings!
Dear Friends in Christ:
As I conclude my tenure as your Senior Pastor, I want to say once again how very thankful I am for the congregation of HLUMC. The recent generosities you have shown me—the retirement party, the last worship service, the love offering and the signed picture—are but the latest of many wonderful gifts I have received from the deep wells of your generosity.
I remain—as I hope I have adequately expressed—even more thankful for your amazing “pastoral care” of me during my difficult season of cancer, multiple surgeries, and painful recuperations. The saints in Philippi have nothing on you guys! Hard as the last 40 months have been for me, personally, you have been a great blessing to me in the midst of all of it.
I have loved my nine years here. I wish I could have held out a little longer. But I love HLUMC more than I have loved my ministry here, and am thankful for the leadership and spirit the Martin family will bring with them. They embody the promise of God’s future for this wonderful congregation.
I leave for Spartanburg with a full heart and a serene spirit. I do not know all of what will happen in days to come—for you or me—but I am very sure that each of you, that I and my family, and this church that we love so much, will live in, experience and prosper by the
Peace of Christ,
Featured Volunteer for VBS!!
Calling all Volunteers! Church Family: WE NEED YOU!
HLUMC will host almost 100 children at this year’s VBS! What a blessing. With that comes a great need for volunteer support. Volunteer roles include group leader, station leader (recreation, snack, science and crafts), decorations, set-up and take-down.
Contact Mrs. Lizanne with your interest in any of these responsibilities via email or text at 980-406-4527. Thank you!!
We are pleased to announce that Pastor Duncan Martin has been appointed as senior minister at Hawthorne Lane UMC!
Pastor Duncan has been in the ministry for 13 years. He is passionate about community-based ministry, excellent worship and fostering a church that is inclusive of all people. His wife, Meredith, is an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church and a licensed clinical social worker. They have twin daughters, Ginny and Kate, Agnes, their dog and two gerbils. They are eagerly anticipating becoming a part of our faith family at HLUMC!
We look forward to welcoming the Martin family to HLUMC this summer, with July 10th scheduled as Pastor Duncan’s first Sunday in the pulpit.
What a season we just wrapped up! And what a blessing for our neighbors, our community and for all involved in this service project!
HLUMC volunteers hosted 8-14 people each week for 16 weeks, every Tuesday Night, plus an additional Monday night to fulfill the need for a low bed count night. There were beds made, laundry washed & folded, and buses driven to and from. There were incredible meals prepared by loving hands – big and small. There were hands held in a circle while our guests, children, or servers said Grace. There were stories told – some of pain and loss, many of hope and faith, and all building connections between kind hearts. There were late night games of Rummy with laughs and friendly competition. And there was love. Love for our neighbors, and God’s love filled Evans Hall each week.
On behalf of the Missions Committee we thank each and every one of you that had a part in this project. A special thanks to our unsung hero, George Walters, for his dedication, leadership and servant heart.
One of HLUMC’s community partners, Changed Choices, exists so that women who have experienced incarceration may lead restored lives marked by healthy decisions, self-sufficiency and contribution to their communities.
Over the last two years, one hour is the average time the Changed Choices incarcerated clients were able to move outside of their cells. Just one hour.
Help us support Changed Choices and their clients during the week of April 25th through 30th as they host a virtual Journey to Freedom Walk. Please visit the website to learn about how you can make an impact by registering to walk, creating a team, and/or sharing a gift. Contact Katie Gaunter for more information.

Almost 3 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion, with more displaced within the country as cities are shelled. Members of Hawthorne Lane UMC and our surrounding neighborhoods in Charlotte are working together to uplift this nation and our world in prayer to make an impact where we can.
On Saturday, March 26th starting at 7:00pm we will be hosting an outdoor Community Prayer Vigil to lift up Ukraine. There will be a presentation / conversation about the crisis and a prayer vigil, and we invite you to camp out on our church lawns overnight if you would like. Walk over, drive up, join our community in prayer.
The United Methodist Church has feet on the ground in Ukraine. Our tradition of serving those who are victims of tragedy is underwritten by our generous giving. We are collecting money that will go through the United Methodist Committee on Relief—100% of which will be for direct aid to those suffering the effects of this senseless war. The Missions Committee of Hawthorne Lane UMC has pledged to match the moneys collected up to $2,000. Make your checks or online contributions to HLUMC, designated to Ukraine. And please give generously to assist the most vulnerable and needy of these, God’s children, our brothers and sisters.
ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND! Will you also please consider joining our volunteer team?
